Fields of Flame

The fields Sunderside Valley stretch golden and endless under an unforgiving sun. It has been three seasons since the once lush fields have had rain, turning the breadbasket into a tinderbox. All it will takes is one match, one spark, and WOOSH! It all be nothing but ash.

In order to prevent such disaster the brave people of Sunderside have  the Fire Department to protect their homes and their lives... which means they depend on you.

Just you. The entire department. It makes the Christmas parties pretty dull, but at least you always get Employee of the Month.

Your task is to put out all the fires, and keep as much of each area intact. The MORE wheat and structures on the map the higher your potential score, if you can save them. The problem is the more what that is on the map the FASTER the fire will spread.

Features:

  • Score points for every structure and tile saved
  • Fires burn faster or tiles that are worth points, making it harder to control the spread
  • Dynamic fire spread based on the ground tiles
  • Score system

Developer Notes:

This project was created as a part of "TOJam 2025: We're all gettin' out alive!".  We learn a lot about how we need to improve our organizational skills, and standardize a few things for future projects. The 48 hour deadline was really rough for this one since we ran into numerous build issues at the very end.

Overall it was a good experience and the mechanics are certainly intresting and worthy of expansion. Some ideas that did not make it into the project were: adjustable spray patterns, explosive barrels, locked doors you can break down, and the ability to set your own fires to "preburn" an area and create a firebreak.

Most of those mechanics would not have taken too much time to implement, since the system itself is actaully pretty flexible, but getting the gamefeel of them right was out of scope for this short of time.

Sounds intense! I'm eager to get my hands on this one. Btw, if you're up for a fun challenge, I'd love to see what you come up with for the WowCube Game Jam: https://itch.io/jam/wowcube-game-jam They have a very interesting platform and are even offering prizes lol

WOW. Honestly one of the best things I’ve played recently. The mechanics are super addictive, it’s pretty challenging and really makes you think about your strategy. The designs are awesome and the game idea is really original. So far, it’s a solid 10/10.

That said, I did run into a few issues while playing. For example, the tutorial was bugged (it didn’t go past the second text, so I had to figure things out on my own), luckily the mechanics were simple enough to understand. Also, on the second level, there’s another bug: whenever I beat it with 5 stars, the game freezes and doesn’t move on to the third level when I hit continue. It just loops back to the second level over and over.

Still, I was playing the web version, and I think it’s pretty common to run into bugs like that. But once that’s fixed, this game’s gonna be insane!

Thanks a bunch for playing! Already working on fix build so no worries there.
